Origin and Development

Developed as a modified analogue within the growth hormone-releasing peptide family, designed for greater potency and stability than earlier members.

Mechanism as Understood in the Literature

Ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) agonist prompting pituitary growth hormone release. Preclinical cardiovascular research has also described interaction with the CD36 receptor. That finding has generated separate research interest, but it should be read as a preclinical observation rather than an established clinically relevant second mechanism.

Research Status

Human studies exist, including work on growth hormone response and some cardiovascular investigation. As with others in the family, it did not proceed to approval. Some literature notes attenuation of the growth hormone response with continued administration.

Regulatory status

Not FDA-approved for any indication. Prohibited in competitive sport under World Anti-Doping Agency rules.

Commonly Confused With

Grouped with GHRP-2 and GHRP-6 as ghrelin receptor agonists. Distinguished from them by potency and by the CD36 interaction described in the cardiovascular literature.
