Origin and Development

An early member of the growth hormone-releasing peptide family, developed from research on enkephalin-derived compounds that were found to stimulate growth hormone release through a pathway distinct from GHRH.

Mechanism as Understood in the Literature

Ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) agonist. Prompts pituitary growth hormone release, and is associated in the literature with marked appetite stimulation, consistent with ghrelin's physiological role. Also associated with increases in cortisol and prolactin.

Commonly Confused With

Frequently grouped with GHRP-2 and hexarelin. All three act at the same receptor, but differ in potency and in the degree of cortisol, prolactin, and appetite response. GHRP-6 is generally described as producing the strongest appetite effect of the three.

Analytical Profile
