Origin and Development

Identified from a partial sequence of a protein found in human gastric juice and designated Body Protection Compound-157. The overwhelming majority of the published research originates from a single research group at the University of Zagreb led by Predrag Sikirić. That concentration is worth noting: independent replication is the thing regulators and pharmaceutical developers weight most heavily, and there has been relatively little of it here.

Mechanism as Understood in the Literature

Preclinical work describes effects on angiogenesis, growth factor expression, and nitric oxide signaling pathways. The literature characterizes it as a cytoprotective agent that maintains endothelial integrity, with an angiomodulatory effect. Mechanistic understanding remains incomplete and is drawn almost entirely from animal models.

Research Status

There is an extensive preclinical literature spanning rodent models of wound healing, tendon and bone injury, gastrointestinal damage, and neurological injury. Human data is minimal by comparison. As of early 2026 only three published human studies exist, all small pilot studies without placebo controls, together covering fewer than thirty subjects. A Phase 1 trial registered in December 2015 (NCT02637284, sponsored by PharmaCotherapia) was designed to assess safety and pharmacokinetics in 42 healthy volunteers; it was reportedly canceled in 2016 and no results were ever published. No randomized controlled trials have been published.

Regulatory status

Not FDA-approved for any indication. Added to the FDA's Category 2 list of bulk drug substances in September 2023, which barred compounding pharmacies from preparing it. In April 2026 the FDA removed it from Category 2 following withdrawal of the nomination, but did not move it to Category 1, and it has no recognized USP/NF monograph. It is scheduled for Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee review on July 23, 2026. Temporarily banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2022; not currently listed as banned.

Commonly Confused With

Frequently marketed alongside and conflated with TB-500, which is a different peptide with a different origin and sequence. Also sold under names referencing "stable gastric pentadecapeptide" or the development code PL-14736.

Analytical Profile

15 amino acids, sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, molecular weight approximately 1419 Da. Identity is confirmable by HPLC retention time against a reference standard; mass spectrometry gives a stronger confirmation. Purity is assessed by RP-HPLC area normalization.

Stability and Handling

Supplied lyophilized. Described in the literature as unusually stable in human gastric juice for a peptide of its class. Lyophilized material is generally stable at reduced temperature; reconstituted material is less stable and temperature-sensitive.
