Origin and Development

Identified through research into nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme involved in nicotinamide metabolism that has been implicated in adipose tissue biology. 5-Amino-1MQ was developed as a small-molecule inhibitor of that enzyme for research purposes.

Mechanism as Understood in the Literature

Inhibits NNMT. In preclinical models, NNMT inhibition has been associated with effects on adipocyte metabolism and with increased cellular NAD+ availability, since NNMT consumes nicotinamide that would otherwise feed NAD+ synthesis.

Preclinical only. Rodent studies have examined effects on diet-induced obesity and adipose tissue. There is no human clinical data.

Routinely sold and listed as a peptide. It is not: it is a quinolinium small molecule. Also frequently associated with NAD+ supplementation on the basis of the shared metabolic pathway, though it is a distinct compound acting by a different mechanism.
